Hi-I have been a type one since I was 3. I think I am pregnant, is there any
things I should be doing other then taking my insulin and sticking to my
diet?

Hi!
I just had a baby one month ago and I have diabetes since I was 10. I’m 24
now.
I just took really good care of my BG and kept it in normal range. I don’t
know how often will your doctors tell you to come see them but mine told me
to come for BG check every 2 weeks and I did an ultrasound every month. My
baby boy is perfectly healthy and I gave birth by cesarian 2 weeks before my
term.(that is usual for a diabetic pregnant women in my country).
The only problem I had was severe hypos in my 1st trimester.
Good luck!
Desiree.

there is also another group that you can join to share with other expectant
type 1 mothers to be…..
To tell someone about this group, try sending them this link:
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/PositiveDiabeticPregnancy/
And yes, we are still for type Is only. This has been the long-standing
preference of our membership. However, another resource for that person
might be http://www.diabeticmommy.com, which has a discussion group for diabetics
of all types and is run by a type II.

Hi, Amanda:
Your first step is to find a high-risk OB, aka. perinatologist. They
likely will want to see you at 6-7 weeks or so. You might want to call
your endo for an appt as well.
As others on this thread have posted, you should monitor your b.s.
closely and you might want to get a increased prescription for test
strips, since you might be testing 12-20 times per day. (Just tell
your insurer you are pregnant and they will authorize the increased
amounts.)
You’ll find a lot of guidance on the Yahoo board–the T1 input is very
valuable.
Congratulations!
–Lara

I have a 17 y/o daughter (just turned 17 in july)
who has been type 1 since
16 months old. Who, unfortunately, is
pregnant. She is now 20 weeks, and has had
3 sonograms, which have determined the
baby does not have spina bifida (sp?), she
goes back for another in 2 weeks to check
the heart for abmormalities. She currently
takes 4 shots (+) a day, depending on her
sugar.
She is taking NPH and Humalog. She will
see the endo once a month, but will fax her
sugars weekly, and checks her ketones
EVERY morning.
I am so worried, as this is a hard thing to
watch happen to my "baby".
Her A1c was 5.5 when checked this past
friday. There were a lot of lows
in the beginning, but now she seems to be
needing more insulin.
As the pregnancy progresses, the demand
for insulin will increase, something to do with
the placenta either using the insulin or
something similar, I am not quite sure of the
medical reasoning behind this. All of the dr’s,
the OBGYN, the ultrasound specialist, and the
endo will all work very closely together.
My daughter has to see the nutritionist as well
as the diabetes educator, in addition to all of
the other doctors.
This is a very trying time, but she chose
"LIFE" and now we will deal with the road we
have ahead of us. Not an ideal situation, but I
am trying to be supportive, though in the
beginning I must say, I was not.
Your doctors will point you in the right
directions.
I hope all goes well for you.
