Discussion of diabetes management in day to day life

Phytic acid / anti-inflammatory / anti-ulcer / iron binder

Indian J Exp Biol. 2004 Feb;42(2):179-85.  Related Articles, Links

Antiinflammatory and antiulcer activities of phytic acid in rats.

Maximum antiinflammatory activity of phytic acid (PA) was seen at an oral dose
of 150 mg/kg in the carrageenan induced rat paw edema model. Although PA showed
ability to prevent denaturation of proteins, it showed less antiinflammatory
activity than ibuprofen. Ability of PA to bring down thermal denaturation of
proteins might be a contributing factor in the mechanism of action against
inflammation. PA, at all the doses tested, showed significant protection from
ulcers induced by ibuprofen, ethanol and cold stress, with a maximum activity
at 150 mg/kg. There was a significant increase in gastric tissue
malondialdehyde levels in ethanol treated rats but these levels decreased
following PA pretreatment. Moreover, pretreatment with PA significantly
inhibited various effects of ethanol on gastric mucosa, such as, reduction in
the concentration of nonprotein sulfhydryl groups, necrosis, erosions,
congestion and hemorrhage. These results suggested that gastro-protective
effect of PA could be mediated by its antioxidant activity and cytoprotection
of gastric mucosa.

For some reason, this person thinks we care about what he’s saying.

I don’t know what delusions cause this, but it’s best to ignore him
and hope he gets help. Obsessions can have many causes; who knows why
    he does this?

Not at all. I’ve just been posting to explain to newbies that they
shouldn’t bother talking to this person.

There are several people posting to the diabetes news groups that
aren’t interested in discussion. They’ve become obsessed with one idea
or another – mysterious secret cabals poisoning the masses with
artificial sweeteners, conspiracies by the medical establishment to
keep people attractive to magnets, and one guy who just seems to like
    to make himself look important.

(For anyone reading this who thinks they should be in that group, and
you’re not in that short list – well, you’re not even that important.)

I’m not sure why these people have these mental defects, nor why they
insist on displaying them to the world. It could be simple, common
personality disorders that are expressed in a strange way,
obsessive-compulsive disease that’s untreated, flagrant paranoid
schizophrenia – it doesn’t matter. Maybe they are just plain evil and
out to hurt diabetics like Ted says – but then again, I wonder about
    Ted, too.

It’s calmer around here if we just remind folks that there’s no point
in trying to argue with these unfortunate people. It’s also beneath us
to mock them – mocking them probably feeds into some of the delusions
of persecution. And frankly, explaining to the newbies here how what
these people post is silly takes up too much time.

So I just post a message when the more common ones show up, explaining
to people that these unfortunates should just be ignored.

I’m surprised how many new people have e-mailed me to say that they
were grateful I took the time to post so that they didn’t get sucked
    in.

It’s cut down on the useless replies to these people – much to the
dismay of one of them. I think the guy’s ready to stroke out, based on
the e-mails to me. I just skimmed the first 3 e-mails and now I have
that fellow marked as "spam." I assume he’ll continue writing, but how
    will I know? <g>

Besides, I’ve got a newsreader that allows some ad-ons. I’ve automated
some of this. It saves me having to read the drivel and get annoyed. I
don’t even type up most of the messages. I trained an A.I. on my
computer to add some variety. Ok, so it’s not even at the level of
Eliza – it’s not worth the effort of doing a better job.

There are SOOO many easier ways to get rich than via medical

Wrong.  In most areas, a very few do well.  Take insurance.  Massive
number of low-paid clerks and a very few at the top.  Maybe that is not
fair, but few make very much.  Then there is medicine:  those at the top
hugely well, and everyone else, even the lowest person in the class, does
very, very well.  No one fails out of med school either, unless they just
drop out because they don’t like it.

People do fail out of med school, albeit a very small number.  Althout
passing standards should, imo, be higher, the bottom line is that by the
time you get to med school level, you generally have some pretty bright,
    motivated people.

That does not justify the fact that everyone earns top dollar, and the
few do hugely well.  In any other area, including research and development,
only a few get those very large salaries.  What if the average physician
earned the same as the average college professor, who, after all, trained
    the MDs.

Then the quality of healthcare in this country would plummet in a matter of
days.  You be driving to Mexico for an emergent appendectomy, since the wait
in Canada would be too long.

Here’s an interesting exercise: Pick 100 ZIP codes (which is how all the
data is available) and, in each ZIP, take the median earnings for family
practitioners and the median earnings for professors. Deduct the average
personal liability premiums paid by each.

The earnings thus adjusted are astonishingly close.

    Ain’t statistics grand?!?!?
