Painless Heart Attack

Australian researchers studied over 20,000 patients who
went to the hospital with a heart attack or other
coronary emergency. Nearly a quarter of the patients who
didn’t experience chest pain were misdiagnosed and under
treated. And these patients were 3 times more likely to
die in the hospital compared to patients who did feel
chest pain.
8% of the patients studied had acute coronary problems
including heart attacks, unstable angina and clots that
blocked blood flow to the heart without experiencing
chest pain. Their most common symptoms were: shortness of
breath, profuse sweating, nausea, vomiting and fainting.
Patients without chest pain were older, were more likely
to be women and were more likely to have a history of
high blood pressure, diabetes or heart failure. They were
less likely to have a history of smoking, high
cholesterol or angioplasty or bypass.
23% of painless patients were given incorrect initial
diagnosis compared to just 2% of those with chest pain.
13% of patients without chest pain died in the hospital
compared to 4% of those with chest pain.
Researchers used data from an international registry of
over 20,000 heart patients for their study. The study was
led by researchers from Concord Hospital, Sydney,
Australia. It is published in the journal "Chest".
