Subject: Swollen hands and diabetes
My father-in-law is an insulin-dependent diabetic for over 30 years. About 5 or 6 weeks ago he became tired easily and ached a lot. The doctors told him he had Lyme Disease. He was given some medication to fight it. About 2 weeks ago his wrists and hands became swollen and painful to the point of keeping him from sleeping thru the night. The doctors told him that’s arthritis, induced by the diabetes.
I posted this article hoping to find others out there having or had the same condition(s) that would like to share their experiences. Is there hope?
Thank you.

First I’ve ever heard of arthritis induced by diabetes. Did the same
doctor give this prognosis that diagnosed Lymes disease? It sounds more
like a symptom of Lymes to me than a diabetic problem–especially given
a recent diagnosis.

First: Whatever software you’re using apparently puts soft carriage returns in
your text on your screen, but does *NOT* put them in what you post. Your
keyboard has a "Return" key. Learn to use it. Chances are that there are some
folks out there who don’t have a clue as to what you asked because their
software couldn’t deal with 400+-character records.
Second, I’ll ask the question I usually ask when we’re talking about edema:
How good (or bad) is your father-in-law’s control of his diabetes recently?
Edema (whose obvious symptom is swelling) is a frequent symptom of
poorly-controlled diabetes. Chronic fatigue is also a symptom of
poorly-controlled diabetes. What have his BG levels been like?

I try very hard to say exactly what I mean. I’d appreciate it if you’d
bear that in mind and not try to "interpret" my posts to fit your own
preconceived notions if I’m posting in a serious thread. Remember: If you
throw a strawman into a heated debate, flames are likely to be the result.

I just wont to know if the swollen and painful hands and the foot pain/muscle
cramps is a symptom which has a common cause – and the same treatment?
Anybody who can say something about this?
