New vaccination to protect kids against diabetes developed
ANI
Saturday, July 3, 2004
Washington, July 3 (ANI) – Researchers at the ULCA
Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology claim to
have developed a new drug which not only has the
capability to slow down the progression of juvenile
diabetes, but also prevent at-risk children from ever
developing the disease.
The Drug known as Diamyd contains a protein called " GAD"
and was specifically developed for tackling Juvenile
diabetes, which is also called Type 1 diabetes.
The experiment conducted on diabetic-prone mice found
that upon being treated with GAD proteins they did not
develop diabetes. Later tests on people diagnosed with
diabetes proved equally successful.
"The results are quite remarkable. It definitely has the
potential to be a great breakthrough", the National
Enquirer quoted Daniel Kaufman, Ph.D., a professor at the
UCLA Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology as
saying.
Researchers are hopeful that the drug could be used to
vaccinate children against diabetes permanently.
"We’re hoping the drug turns out to be even more
effective on people who are in earlier stages of
diabetes. You want to stop the disease from ever
developing", the paper quoted him as saying.

Jay,
IMHO, using the National Enquirer as a solid news source raises some serious
questions about the quality of the reporting here.
ULCA , the archrivals of UCS and Stanfrod ?
The product is not called Diamyd. The company that makes it is called
Diamyd. You can look at all of their stuff at http://www.diamyd.com . The GAD
study was presented as a poster at the ADA meetings in 2003
http://www.diamyd.com/docs/news.html .
No need to go through a garbled and confused translation from India.
Cheers,
William C Biggs, MD

Yeah, right. I live in Deutschland. Foreigners (sometimes called

foreiners by foreigners) call it Germany. Other foreigners call it
Allemagne. Yet others call it Alemania (this latter having nothing to
