UF to host international insulin symposium
University of Florida faculty, staff and students are invited to
attend the Fifth International Symposium on Insulin and Insulin-Like
Growth Factors at the University Center Hotel on March 3-5.
The symposium, sponsored by the UF College of Medicine’s
department of physiology, will feature 21 experts on insulin from major
universities in Australia, Europe and the United States. The focus of the
symposium will be on recent developments in the field of insulin and insulin
growth factors and their role in diabetes, cancer, neurodegeneration and
hypertrophy.
"One of the objectives of having such a conference at UF is to
provide us with an opportunity to showcase our recent research and excellent
facilities to renowned scientists from different parts of the world," said
Dr. Mohan Raizada, professor of physiology and associate dean of the College
of Medicine’s graduate education. "More than 150 scientists from around the
world are expected to attend."
Raizada, who is among the first researchers to demonstrate the role of
insulin and insulin growth factors in the brain, is co-coordinating the
conference with Dr. Derek Le-Roith, of the National Institutes of Health.
Co-sponsors of the conference include UF Division of Sponsored
Research, the UF Interdisciplinary Center for Biotechnology Research, the UF
Center for Neurobiological Science, Pharmacia/Kabi, Genetech, Inc., Celtrex
Pharmaceuticals, Inc., the UF department of pharmacology and the UF Hyper-
tension Center.
There will also be a poster session on March 3 and 4 and a "Hot
Topics" slide presentation on Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The symposium is
free to all UF employees.
