Nice attempt to try and cover it up. Master Chief *does* die. You then
play as Master Chief in "flashbacks" but he does indeed die towards the
beginning of the game.

Because Halo is not really a planet, it’s revealed that it’s an alien
artifact that was used to keep The Flood (the enemy) at bay. After Halo
is destroyed, The Flood are able to attack and that’s when Master Chief
dies.

It would improve Halo 2 if it were true, for then one would be playing
the single-player campaign with the only interesting character in the
game — the Arbiter.
I like the MC a lot too. The Arbiter has a deeper character than the MC, but
the MC is just plain cool. He’s so pointed and focused.
