Discussion of diabetes management in day to day life

glucophage side effects

I’ve been taking glucophage for about 3 & 1/2 years. After one year I
noticed my toenails on my big toes began to get thicker and became
ingrown on both my feet. About 7 months ago I noticed the same thing
happening on the nails of the toes next to the big toes.

I’m thinking this is a side effect of the glucophage. my doctor os not
aware of such a side effect.

Is this happening or has this happened to anyone else who takes
glucophage?

That’s probably the effect of diabetes you have.

Thick toenails are not caused by Glucophage…

But they are a symptom of diabetic peripheral vascular disease.

"Signs related to the topical or skin changes in PVD are not so easy to
differentiate from other conditions. These symptoms include coldness or
paleness of the leg or feet, if elevated, blue/red discoloration of the
feet or toes, dry skin, fragile or shiny-looking skin, loss of normal
hair growth on lower legs or thick toenails, and sores that do not heal."

How have your A1c tests been over the past 3 1/2 years?

Are they also yellowish?  If so, you could have nail fungus.  That’s common
    in diabetics.

Lesley, how about talking to your MD about increasing the metformin?  My
endo tries to get all his T2 patients to 2000-2500 mg a day.  That
should help zap the insulin resistence more and facilitate weight loss,
    I believe.

It’s tough when you have a combination of medical problems.  I too have
thyroid troubles and fibromyalgia.  I’ve lost some weight, but now seem to
be stuck.  Actually, the only part of me now that has any excess fat on it
besides my boobs is the tummy.  Makes me look pregnant.  :(  The fat came
off everywhere else, but not there.  Wish I had an answer for you.  I don’t.

How tall are you? 67 Kg would give you an acceptable BMI at anything
taller than 165 cm or 5’5". Are you over-stressing on the need to lose
    weight?

I’d be more interested, if I was your doc, in figures like HbA1c,
lipids, post-prandial BGs, blood pressure, than I would be in what
appears to be a reasonable weight. And even if you are vertically
challenged (like swmbo:-) then a continuation of your current exercise
program, with maybe some tweaking of your carbs related to post-prandial
testing, should improve things. But don’t stress about it. It sounds to
me like you’re doing most things right.

You’ve probably been there already, but review Jennifer’s advice at
    http://www.alt-support-diabetes.org/Newly%20Diagnosed.htm. That may
    help.

Maybe, although at a stretch I just make 5’2" in height i’m not too bad
from the back, its not being able to get rid of the belly

Appreciate your description, because that’s part of the problem for me,
lots of loose skin (from weight losss) around the body, that’s not such
a hassle, but an excessively fat belly. I’ll just keep exercising and
trying to eat right without having bg’s spiking.Attending to all this
bizzo is quite a trudge, though isn’t it?

Isn’t that the truth. I love the way you put that. I’d love to have a
t-shirt with that sentence on it!
