This morning I wanted to see what effect honey has on my BG. I’m Type 2.
Hasn’t eaten at least 10 hours before.
My BG was 129 at start, before I eat one table spoon of Honey, 16 gr of
carb, according the labels info.
15 min later 178 BG
another
15 min later 166 BG
another
20 min later 126 BG back to the original reading.
So, looks like in 50 min burned up the 16gr carb of honey.
Did any one do similar test and how does it compare to mine?
Recent "Men’s Health" magazine had an article, that 2-3 tbspn of Honey per
day is very healthy for diabetics.
Contains very important minerals.
Thanks, Julius
If I’m active I need a lot more calories than when sitting
around at the pc or in front of the boob tube. The info you
provided indicates nothing about your activity level to draw
any meaningful inferences from your "experiment".

The only way I would even consider that high carb experiment , is if I was
immediately biking up hills or other highly strenuous physical activity to
burn off the glucose fast . I would bet I would get similar BG numbers
otherwise , and to me that is totaly unacceptable . I value my eyesight too
much to do that !

I think it’s time to cancel your subscription to that magazine. If you
spread it across the day in very small doses you might get away with it.
I try very hard to ensure that I very rarely see a spike over 7.5 (135).
Anything spiking me to 10 (180) would be in the bin or cut right back in
portion size.
If you want to persist with it, try a flat teaspoon in your tea; that
may test OK if you don’t have any other carbs at the same time.

Hi Dave!
Before or under the experiment, I pretty much sit in front of my laptop or
walk for one room to another.
No exercise or excessive calorie burning work I was doing.

I doubt from a few spikes, you would loose your eyesight.
When I was in class for diabetic education few years ago, about how to eat,
the dietitian said, spiking to 180 is OK for a diabetic, long as we keep BG
close to normal level most of the time.
Even healthy person can spike to 180 if they excessively over eating some
times – she told me.

Yup, you keep believing that Julius.
Hopefully, the software for full speech computers, so you can talk and
listen without needing to read or click on a screen, will be fully
developed by the time you find that dietitian may not have been quite
right. I presume she also was a diabetic, so practised what she
preached?
Of course, I could be quite wrong too. I prefer to play the odds and
stay under 7.5 (135).
Ask me again in ten years.

Maybe you right Alan. I’m not sure if she was a diabetic, probably not,
just doing her job, she was in white apron though.
That’s very important for a doctor. For respect.

Szaki,
We need to be careful when you use the term "burned up the 16gr carb".
To me, "burned up" would imply that the carbs were immediately used as an
energy source for you body, like a car would burn gasoline.
But carb can have other fates beside being used as fuel.
Glucose can be disposed of in the liver or muscle where it is stored as
glycogen. Carb energy can be converted to fatty acids, and stored in fat.
Glucose can be spilled into the urine if your glucose goes above 160 or so.
Thus that 16gm carb wasn’t necessarily "burned". It may have been "stored"
or "excreted".
The usual wording in carb research uses the term "glucose disposal" which
recognizes that the glucose can go many places, and used many ways. For a
person at rest, most or the glucose loads are stored in the liver or muscle,
rather than burned. They are then released a short time later to be used as
fuel when you are between meals.
Cheers,
William C Biggs, MD

Honey is not as effective as glucose tablets, so let us say
that you had an almost immediate effect of two glucose tablets,
and a slower effect of another one. That you were fasting may
have increased the speed of the reaction. Your own insulin
plus your liver may have handled the glucose and fructose.

The minerals are minuscule.
