Now, I am sure this will show my ignorance but as a significant other
I can’t help but notice how ravenous my husband gets at certain times.
Even eating properly, right immediately after dinner he will hit the
"left overs" and wipe them out. His appetite is rarely satisfied with
the portions recommended by the dietitian. Has anyone had any
experience at all with medications that can counterbalance the food
cravings? It is almost like a cycle. The more you eat, the large you
become, the more insulin your body needs, the hungrier you get…the
more you eat! Any success stories or suggestions…

That cycle is possible. Breaking that cycle requires realizing that you’re
probably using a bit too much insulin, and cutting back the dosage as well as
the amount you’re eating.

I have the same problem which poked it head up when I finaly got to an
Endo after a bought with type II and a HMO doctor. Having type II and
off medication for 4 months I too had a eating problem where I would
wake up at night and head for the frig to binge. Liked the peanut
butter and milk; is anyone supprized? I started putting on weight and
feeling very bad again which I couldn’t understand beacuse the my
glucose varies 80 to 135 with some spikes at 170.
The Endo told me I had hypothyroidism. From what he says I have a
triple header because my auto-immune is killing the thyroid, panceas,
adrenal glands, and skin pigment (Vitiligo). Anyway, the eating
problem in my case could be the nonfuncting thyoid gland. The tests
come back soon. It’s happy honeymoon for me and I’m getting a realy
good "F" out of this marrage so I’m told.

Dear Pattispirit. I haven’t been able to respond to your msg yet.. but
want to just say hello, to say I got you msg.
I tried a reply before, but the node was out of whak and it was lost.
Seizing the opportunity of your current observation on ravenous eating..
let me hypothesize the right foods, prepared without frying, boiling,
and not out of a box in whole or part will satisfy.
The body will demand eating of copious amount struggling to get vital
nutrients, even in that means a deluge of junk comes along with it.
Junk means stripped or destroyed food, not only the conventional
definition such as chips, dip, soda, gatorade, cake, cookies, pie, lofat
this and that, lo-cal this and that..
That behavior was observed and quantified in kids 30 years ago..
surely is more broad than kids..
Rambling.. eliminate all pasta, use brown rice instead.
no boxed cereals.. oats and raisins soaked 6 hours in whole milk
instead.. that’s real simple.. beef it up with some bran(s).. wheat,,
oat, rice..
No sugar stuff, except molasses, the mineral rich ashes of the sugar
making proces (sucrose)..
Need a quick sugar drink when going hypo ? Of course. Boil (gently)
1 cup white sugar with 3 cups water acidified by 1 tablespoon of any
vinegar. For 5 minutes. The result is a drink of glucose and fructose.
Same thing as is done commercially to produce the products on the
shelves..
Eliminate margarine.. use butter..
Bottom line. guiding rule… snuggle up to mother nature.. minimize
processing, leaching, burning.. whether by your hand or some
procesor’s hand… seek diversity.. and win beyond imagination.
Now… will he listen to that kind of talk ? 50;50 not, I’lll bet.
To answer a question you asked in your msg, no I’m not diabetic, am 56
and God willing in complete health, but my wife is 26yr IDD with full
range of complications.. stubborn.. nearing dialysis. In retrospect she
has been the laboratory in which I’ve built the beliefs and protocol
hinted at above.. I want to write a book.. I suspect you are a
"scientist" too in your essence.. "science", L. scientia, to know.
You want to know. Keep going. This disease can be eliminated
(prevented, but not cured, darn it).

Rosalie, I am not a doctor but I have diabetes and I have been on
prednisone. The medication prednisone is a steroid and will generally
shoot your bg’s very high. My doctor warned me to check my bg’s more
often than normal while I was taking prednisone. I tried to control the
bg’s but the doctors believe that the prednisone shut down my pancreas.
I also remember the doctors telling me not to quit taking prednisone
cold-turkey. They told me to taper off slowly.

Prednisone will elevate the blood sugar readings and so will an infection
of any type. Since he has stopped the prednisone that is no longer a
factor, but the UTI is definately a factor in the elevated readings. I
would worry if the readings do not go back to normal with the infection
cleared up and in the meanwhile talk to the doctor about adjusting meds
until they do go down.

I’ve been on insulin for 7 years now. I was first diagnosed in
1988, and started on insulin immediately. Two months later, my sugar
returned to normal. I was off of insulin for 2 years, with the exception
of one period when I was given an injection of cortisone for a bad knee.
The doctor FORGOT that I was a diebetic. I had to go back onto insulin
for 2 months after that 1 injection of cortisone. After that, my sugar
returned to normal for about 1 more year, and then little by little crept
up until I had to go back onto insulin again. I have been on it ever
since, and I assume that I will be on it forever. Steroids DO raise blood
sugar. The problem with cortisone & prednisone is that they stay in your
body for a LONG time, even after only one injection.

Yes! That was the first indication that I was diabetic. Started
prednisone for asthma and ended up urinating on the hour all night long.
Scared the bjesus out of me. Looking in the PDR, there is a warning about
use in borderline diabetics. (I’m a type II now).

My son is on high doses of prednisone for leukemia. We were warned, by
the doctors and the literature that prednisone _can_ cause diabetes.

While it is certainly true that you could lose "weight" by
reducing the number of calories in your diet this will be
a short term effect if you don’t ALSO incorporate exercise
into the program. First of all you want to lose FAT and not
just weight. Weight loss achieved by diet alone is usually
lost at the expense of muscle. If you lose muscle mass then you
will decrease your metabolism and have a more difficult time
to burn the fat. The amount of exercise needed to burn a certain
number of calories is very misleading because it only couunts
the number of calories consumed during the exercise and does
not count the increase in basal metabolic rate as a result of
increasing muscle mass. Losing weight by diet alone is a sure
fire way to get into a yoyo cycle of losing and gaining with
the ultimate result of getting even fatter as when you lose
weight ist is a combination of fat and muscle and when you gain
it is mostly fat.
There is little question in my mind that exercise is the key to
maintaining a lean, trim body. I know from personal experience.
