Why does my blood glucose run high before I have my menstrual period?

Question:
Why does my blood glucose run high before I have my menstrual period?

Answer:
Many women with diabetes have swings in blood glucose control around the
time of menstruation. There are many possible reasons for this, from changes
in behavior (eating more food) to hormonal changes (high estrogen levels
before the period begins can increase your insulin requirements). Young
women seem to have the largest swings in blood glucose during their monthly
cycle and need to adjust their insulin. Older women also have erratic swings
in hormone levels and may have a challenge with managing blood glucose.

As you become familiar with your body’s rhythm, you may find the changes in
your insulin needs become predictable from month to month. Monitor your
blood glucose often and adjust your insulin as necessary during your
menstrual period.

What's the lowest reading that's ok before exercising?

What is the lowest reading that is ok before exercise? I try to eat
something before exercise, but since I go low anyways with 20-30 minutes
of walking/stairs, I’m wondering if I should be at a higher starting point.
Right now I want to walk, my reading is 4.8. I did eat something, so I’m
waiting 30 minutes to see if it’s gone up, then I’ll walk.

Just wondering.

keeping feet warm

When my brother, who is a diabetic, had surgery on a badly infected
big toe, was given a velcro fastened open toe shoe to wear. In winter
with snow on the ground his foot was always cold. Then he found out
about "louiesbooties" and he got one. His foot was kept warm and he
was so happy! I’m glad someone figured out a way for those who have
had surgery, or have sores on their feet to keep feet warm and dry!

Leptin level in vegetarian children

[Serum leptin concentration and some lipid parameters in vegetarian children]

[Article in Polish]

Laskowska-Klita T, Ambroszkiewicz J, Klemarczyk W.

Zaklad Biochemii i Diagnostyki Laboratoryjnej Instytutu Matki i Dziecka w
Warszawie.

Leptin, a hormone from adipose tissue, regulates feeding behavior, satiation
rate, energy expenditure and also plays an important role in maturation and
reproduction. Recent studies support the concept that several factors such as a
diet may influence on leptin levels. The aim of this study was to investigate
serum concentration of leptin and lipids status in prepubertal children aged
from 2 to 10 years with two different nutritional habits: vegetarian (n = 24)
and omnivorous diet (n = 20). Serum leptin concentration was determined by
immunoenzymeassay (ELISA). Serum lipids (cholesterol, HDL- and LDL-cholesterol,
triglyceride) were measured by enzymatic and apolipoproteins by
immunoturbidimetric methods. We noticed that in vegetarian diet there is a high
rate of fiber (nearly twice as high as in omnivorous diet) and polyunsaturated
acids (35% as much). In our study vegetarian children had lower total
cholesterol and cholesterol in fractions HDL and LDL than meat eaters did. Also
the apolipoproteins levels in vegetarian children were significantly below that
of nonvegetarians. There is no differences in triglyceride concentration
between the two groups of children. The mean serum leptin level in vegetarian
children was significantly lower (3.1 +/- 1.2 ng/mL) as compared with the
omnivores (5.6 +/- 2.1 ng/mL) (p < 0.0001).

Insulin pump OK for preschoolers with diabetes

Insulin pump OK for preschoolers with diabetes
Oct 14 (Reuters Health) – Young children with diabetes can be treated as
effectively with a portable insulin pump as with multiple daily insulin
injections, researchers report

Dr. Linda A. DiMeglio and colleagues from Indiana University, Indianapolis,
studied 42 diabetic preschoolers who were either treated with continuous
insulin infusion using an insulin pump or by intensive insulin injection
therapy. The investigators compared control of blood sugar levels, safety,
and parents’ satisfaction in the two groups.

A total of 37 children completed 6 months of therapy, including 17 on
injection therapy and 20 on pump therapy.

Blood glucose control did not differ significantly between the two groups,
according to the results of the study published in the Journal of
Pediatrics.

The number of episodes of abnormally low blood sugar was higher in the group
using pumps than in those on injection therapy, but both groups experienced
one instance of a seizure due to this condition.

Parents were happy with pump therapy, and 95 percent of families continued
on the treatment beyond the 6 months.

"It remains to be seen whether the benefit of insulin pump therapy in terms
of flexibility and convenience justifies the increased costs for very young
children with diabetes," the researchers conclude.

"Studies of long-term outcomes of children begun on pump therapy at very
young ages also are needed," they add.

Long term magnesium supplementation

Magnes Res. 2004 Jun;17(2):109-14.    Related Articles, Links

Long term magnesium supplementation influences favourably the
natural evolution of neuropathy in Mg-depleted type 1 diabetic patients
(T1dm).

De Leeuw I, Engelen W, De Block C, Van Gaal L.

Department Diabetology, Metabolism and Clinical nutrition,
University Hospital Antwerp, Belgium. ivo.dele…@ua.ac.be

Chronic Mg depletion in T1dm has been linked to polyneuropathy (PNP).
Short term Mg supplementation has suggested a decrease in pathological
EMG signs typical for PNP. The aim of this study is to determine if long
term supplementation under stable metabolic control can normalize the Mg
status and influence the natural evolution of PNP. 110 T1dm with chronic
Mg depletion (erythrocyte Mg < 2.3 mMol/l) were randomised to receive
300 mg Mg++ daily or no supplement for a period of 5 years. Follow-up
was organized by the same diabetologist: HbA1c, renal function and Mg
status every 3 months, electromyography (EMG) and clinical neurological
control with staging every year. Drop-out was decided for recurrent DKA,
diseases or drugs interfering with Mg status or side-effects of Mg
treatment. 97 patients finished the study: 49 were supplemented (group
A) and 48 served as controls (group B). At the start there were no
significant differences between both groups. HbA1c after 5 years
(A:7.80%, B:7.75%) was not significantly different from the start.
Erythrocyte Mg (Mg rbc) rose significantly in group A to normal levels
but remained low in group B. Staging of PNP after 5 years shows a
decrease in 39%, statu quo in 49% and a worsening in 12% in group A and
8, 31 and 61% respectively in group B. Normalization of EMG signs was
only seen in incipient PNP. Logistic regression analysis shows that
longer duration of diabetes (p < 0.006) and low Mgrbc (p < 0.05) are the
major determinants of PNP evolution. Under stable metabolic control long
term Mg supplementation is able to restore a normal Mg status and
influence favourably the natural evolution of PNP as compared to non
supplemented T1dm controls.

Diabetes and fasting

Dear friends,

We’ve discovered that my mother suffered with diabetes about 2 months ago.
She has the 2-nd type (insluine independent) and drinks Diabeton. The main
way she makes the glucose levels to decrease is physical excercises and
Yoga.

She used to fast for a few years before and feels now that this might help.
The scheme was a day without food completely with a very gentle end of the
procedure and getting back to food.

I’d appreciate much your opinion and experience: will fasting help, or can
it harm?

Also, does the glucose level depend on the season? The average level before
was 120 (with Diabeton), now it’s very hard to decrease it lower than 140,
why could it be?

Thank you in advance.
