Discussion of diabetes management in day to day life

Carb Question

I have just joined this news group. I notice that you all discuss various topics in here. I have a question and I was hoping that you would be able to answer it. I was wondering if there was anything else you can cuont against Carbs to make them lower. such as there is 9 carbs, and there is 3 grams of fiber, it would be 3 Carbs. Is there anything else you can count against carbs to make them lower? Thanks For the help!

nope, nothing.  but you can practice portion control.

First off, your math is wrong.  9 total carbs minus 3 grams of fiber is 6
grams of carb net.  Also remember that outside the US, and even sometimes
inside the US, I think, fiber is already subtracted from total carbs on
    packages, so check carefully.

Secondly, as far as the net grams taken in, the answer is no, but fat and
fiber may both slow down the arrival in your blood stream of the glucose
from those carbs.  Some T2s may have diminished phase I insulin but still
plenty (if not too much) phase II insulin, so slowing the peak down may
make it lower than it would have been if it had hit sooner.

As far as his question goes, the other things that can be subtracted
from the carb count FOR SOME PEOPLE are sugar alcohols.  The idea is
that they are digested slowly enough that they don’t cause blood sugar
spikes, don’t cause extra insulin release and so on.

The reason I emphasize "for some people" is that there is apparently
quite a bit of variation from person to person as to how they react to
these materials.  Some people appear to digest them as easily as
sugars, others don’t.  Some people also report digestive problems such
as gas (Maltitol commonly has this effect) or diarrhea (Lactitol
affects many people this way).  From what people here have been
reporting, significant digestive problems when eating fewer than, say,
20 grams generally mean you CAN subtract them.  Nonetheless, this is
something which really should be tested for individually.  Several
people have reported increases in blood sugar levels that went just as
high as with any other carbs – but significantly delayed.  Instead of
hitting a peak in an hour or two the peak hit after four or five
    hours.
