Measuring Insulin?

I would like some to tell me how we measure insulin in the
blood stream.

How long does insulin remain active in the blood stream?

Jeez .. ANOTHER .. prize / aspirin raises nitric oxide

It seems they are giving out prizes for .. stuff I’ve already told you
..

Heh .. heh ..

a)Chelating / binding of iron disallows it to rust / oxidize which
destroys
nitric oxide .. and by binding allows nitric oxide to be released
resulting in
increased vasular flow.

A chelate theory for the mechanism of action of aspirin-like drugs.

New mechanism of action of Aspirin discovered
02 Oct 2005

Dr. Derek W. Gilroy from the Centre for Clinical Pharmacology and
Therapeutics in London is the winner of the 10th International
Aspirin® Award. The British scientist has unearthed a hitherto unknown
mechanism of action of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) which explains how
the active ingredient of Aspirin® inhibits inflammation. Dr. Gilroy’s
research is unusual in that his studies into the anti-inflammatory mode
of action or, in other words, the inhibition of inflammation by ASA,
are completely novel. He has shown that the substance has the unique
ability to trigger the formation of nitric oxide. With the aid of this,
white blood cells are better able to fight infection.

"Dr. Gilroy has demonstrated a biological effect of ASA, providing
new insight into the mechanisms of action of acetylsalicylic acid in
terms of inflammation and congenital immunity," said Kurt Soland,
Head of the Region Europe in Bayer HealthCare’s Consumer Care Division,
in recognition of the Award Advisory Board’s decision. Added Soland,
"Dedicated young scientists like Dr. Gilroy are gradually eliciting
more and more of ASA’s secrets. The International Aspirin® Award
motivates them to study the substance and provides impetus for further
research."

Dr. Gilroy discovered in a series of experiments that ASA exerts its
full anti-inflammatory effect in acute inflammation through the
production of nitric oxide (NO). ASA was already known to inhibit the
formation within the body of prostaglandins or "pain amplifiers"
but that is not all that it does. The substance also produces
inflammation-inhibiting hormones known as lipoxins, which in turn form
nitric oxide (NO) and increase the nitric oxide levels in the blood.
This phenomenon plays a prominent role in particular in acute
inflammation, as NO regulates the transport of white blood cells to
sites of infection and injury. If ASA is taken, it is easier for white
blood cells to leave the blood system so that they can fight infection
or repair injuries to tissues. As a result, warmth, redness, swelling
and pain are reduced.

In his laudation to the British scientist, Professor Dr. Karsten
Schrör, Head of the Institute of Pharmacology and Clinical
Pharmacology at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf and a
member of the Aspirin® Award Scientific Advisory Board, again clearly
stressed the special significance of Dr. Gilroy’s experiments. "Dr.
Gilroy’s discovery considerably broadens the known spectrum of the
biological actions of the active ingredient of Aspirin® and
demonstrates that only some of the numerous biological activities of
ASA have been investigated to date."

Statins for type 1 diabetics

All,

I am 24 years old, diagnosed as type 1 diabetic aged 7. My doctor is
presently suggesting putting me on a statin, to reduce future cardiac
risk. However, whilst searching around I have been unable to find any
research regarding the effectiveness of statins for type 1 diabetics,
nor on the effects of taking them for ~50 years (hopefully…)

I have seen lots of reasonably convincing material regarding the
benefits of statin therapy for older/type 2 diabetics, but nothing
regarding type 1′s (beyond ‘good for type 2, therefore also good for
type 1′) or the effects over the very long timescales I would be
looking at. I suspect this is simply due to the research not having
been done , but does anyone have any pointers to material I might want
to look at before making a decision?

Thanks,

Jeremy

Black Bean Salad

I’ve been making a black bean salad with S&W canned beans for some time,
but decided to go with dried beans to reduce the sodium.  Anyway, the
black bean has a lower carb content than kidney beans and seems to treat
my blood sugar better.  Anybody find black beans to be a reasonable
choice for diabetes? The dried beans amount to 8 gram of net carb per
half cup, but I find this to be a slower carb. I typically  have a 3/4
cup serving of the following recipe and wind up with only 1/2 cup of
beans and 8 grams of carb.

Here’s the recipe

Ingredients:

16 oz bag of dried black beans
15 oz can of diced tomatoes or dice 3 fresh tomatoes
5 stalks of celery
1 jalapena pepper (seeds removed)
1 bunch cilantro
2 fresh limes squeezed
2 tsp. cumin
1 tsp. cayenne
2 Tbsp. dried onion flakes
salt to taste

Soak the dried beans overnight. Cook until tender. Cool.

Food process on "chop" the celery, jalapena, and cilentro. Stir into the
beans.

Add diced tomatoes.

Add spices, salt, onion flakes, and fresh lime. Chill.

I noticed for the first time on eggland’s eggs container
boasting about 100 mg of Omega 3 . Is this anyway different
from the other varieties / just trade gimmick ?

Anyway I could make out a less frying and boiling time
as compared to others .

questions and answers about pork insulin

Questions and Answers Pork Insulin
http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/dhp-mps/brgtherap/activit/fs-fi/qa_qr_insulin_…

6 July 2005

Issue:
A small number of individuals with diabetes do not respond well to
using human insulin and require insulin made from animals (pork
insulin) for the treatment of their condition. Currently only one
manufacturer, Eli Lilly Canada Inc., has authorization to sell pork
insulin in Canada.

Q1: What is the situation regarding the availability of pork insulin in
Canada?

On July 6, 2005, Eli Lilly Canada Inc. announced that it has decided to
discontinue its Iletin II Regular and Iletin II NPH pork insulins. It
is expected that supplies of these insulins will remain available in
Canada until April 1, 2006.

Q2: What is Health Canada doing to ensure that pork insulin is
available to those who prefer this type of insulin?

Health Canada is working with manufacturers in an attempt to ensure
uninterrupted access to pork insulin. In their announcement on July 6,
2005, Eli Lilly Canada Inc. mentioned that another manufacturer,
Wockhardt UK Limited, has filed submissions with Health Canada for pork
insulin products. The submissions are currently being reviewed by
Health Canada.

Health Canada understands and sympathizes with the concerns of patients
who face uncertainty regarding the supply of pork insulin. However,
Health Canada does not have the authority to require that a
manufacturer make or sell any particular product.

Q3: How long will it take until the pork insulins from Wockhardt UK
Limited are available in Canada?

Health Canada is unable to say when these products may be available in
Canada. Health Canada’s role is to ensure that the safety and efficacy
of biologics available to Canadians, such as insulin, have been
demonstrated. It is also the role of Health Canada to promote the
informed use of these products. Health Canada is committed to reviewing
the Wockhardt pork insulin submissions as diligently as possible while
respecting this mandate.

In the event where the supply of the Eli Lilly Canada Inc. pork
insulins becomes exhausted and the Wockhardt pork insulins have not
been granted market authorization, Health Canada will work with the
manufacturer to identify other regulatory options to provide continued
access to pork insulin.

Q4: What should I do if I am currently using one of the pork insulins
being discontinued?

If you are currently using Iletin II Regular or Iletin II NPH pork
insulins, see your physician as soon as possible to discuss your health
issues and the treatment options available to you.

For more information, you may call Eli Lilly Canada’s Customer Response
Centre at 1-888-545-5972.
