Prandin and weight gain?

My doctor has me taking 1mg of Prandin 15 to 30 minutes before lunch and
dinner. This has been going on for approx. 1 1/2 months. In that time
I’ve gained 12 pounds even though my diet is basically the same as it
was before I started using Prandin. Prandin is the ONLY change.

I know that Prandin causes my beta cells to dump more insulin into my
bloodstream. Is that increase causing my weight gain?

Me: T2 taking 12u Humolog with each meal 3× per day, 66u Lantus
between 9:00 and 10:00pm, 1mg Prandin with lunch and dinner.

Iron binders / insulin resistance

alpha-lipoic Acid Mitigates Insulin Resistance in Goto-Kakizaki Rats.

Bitar MS, Wahid S, Pilcher CW, Al-Saleh E, Al-Mulla F.

Impaired glucose uptake and metabolism by peripheral tissues is a common
feature in both type I and type II diabetes mellitus. This phenomenon was
examined in the context of oxidative stress and the early events within the
insulin signalling pathway using soleus muscles derived from non-obese,
insulin-resistant type II diabetic Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rats, a well-known
genetic rat model for human type II diabetes. Insulin-stimulated glucose
transport was impaired in soleus muscle from GK rats. Oxidative and
non-oxidative glucose disposal pathways represented by glucose oxidation and
glycogen synthesis in soleus muscles of GK rats appear to be resistant to the
action of insulin when compared to their corresponding control values. These
diabetes-related abnormalities in glucose disposal were associated with a
marked diminution in the insulin-mediated enhancement of protein kinase B
(Akt/PKB) and insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1)-associated
phosphatidylinostol 3-kinase (PI 3-kinase) activities; these two kinases are
key elements in the insulin signalling pathway. Moreover, heightened state of
oxidative stress, as indicated by protein bound carbonyl content, was evident
in soleus muscle of GK diabetic rats. Chronic administration of the
hydrophobic/hydrophilic antioxidant alpha -lipoic-acid (ALA, 100 mg/kg, ip)
partly ameliorated the diabetes-related deficit in glucose metabolism, protein
oxidation as well as the activation by insulin of the various steps of the
insulin signalling pathway, including the enzymes Akt/PKB and PI-3 kinase.
Overall, the current investigation illuminates the concept that oxidative
stress may indeed be involved in the pathogenesis of certain types of insulin
resistance. It also harmonizes with the notion of including potent antioxidants
such as ALA in the armamentarium of antidiabetic therapy.

Salvaging the heart

Purging iron from the heart.

Methods are now available to measure the magnitude of iron accumulation in the
heart. Their validation currently relies on indirect evidence and not on
chemical estimation in cardiac biopsies. All patients with symptomatic heart
disease appear to have abnormal T2* values, but many patients without
symptomatic heart disease also have evidence of increased myocardial iron.
Although there is no proof to date that increased myocardial iron, as evidenced
by abnormal magnetic resonance imaging, carries an adverse prognosis, it is
likely that such new information will affect the chelating programme of
patients. In these cases, there are a number of options available: (i) ongoing
treatment with either desferrioxamine (DFO) or deferiprone may be intensified;
(ii) the patient may be switched to the alternative chelator or (iii) combined
chelation with both DFO and deferiprone may be started, which is more effective
than using either chelator alone. For patients with symptomatic heart disease,
continuous intravenous DFO with, or without deferiprone, remains the currently
recommended treatment, in view of its documented ability to salvage these
patients.

If real doctor(s) on the Net are helping people, it would not be a waste
of time.

Truth is simple.

You remain in my prayers, dear neighbor whom I love.

Gestational Diabetes

I was just diagnosed with gestational diabetes and have been told not to
excessively worry – that the baby will be just fine once I get this thing
under control.  Does anyone have any experience with this that would like to
share?

Thanks!

Christians call it prayer.

Yes, prayer works.

When they pray, Christians also enjoy the added benefit of God’s
blessings for themselves and others on top of the stress reduction that
occurs with meditation.  Such benefits would be expected to help folks
with complications arising from either diabetes or obesity making this
discussion on-topic for all NGs receiving this thread.

New Anti-Atkins Group

STEVE BAYT
(Parma/Brook Park, Ohio)

Well, I can’t think of any groups members who most dislike Atkins then
those I am posting to this afternoon. I have a long list of articles
against Atkins by typing in STEVE BAYT Atkins Diet in google groups
search.

Instead of constantly trolling newsgroups, I decided to start one of
my own entirely against Atkins and moderated as so. Anyone who would
like to join may feel free to have a place to get their fustrations
out against what is becoming a carb-less world of people who will have
no energy until they have cardiac arrrests.

So, feel free to check out what could be the first Anti-Atkins
newsgroup at the below link, which for some reason isn’t coming up on
search engines.

Postings will only be accepted if they adhere to the same journalistic
standards as is done with Letters To The Editors, guest columns or
media interviews.

I want verifiable sources for information using preferably non-profit
organizations or actual newspapers articles. This group isn’t going to
be like the Atkins groups which end up being like infomercials or even
worse totally brain dead. If a newspaper wouldn’t publish it, neither
will I.

I would rather have one good posting a week or month, then hundreds of
needless postings every hour. I am going for quality, not quantity. A
newsgroup that is more like a trade publication about how bad Atkins
is.

Basically, I am going beyond being a E-journalist to being like an
E-Managing Editor. So, when submitting think of what you send as a
submission to a mainstream newspaper.  I don’t believe in apologizing
for bad postings or now bad posting selection.

Because Love Means Never Having To Say. You’re Sorry.
