New vaccination to protect kids against diabetes developed
ANI
Saturday, July 3, 2004
Washington, July 3 (ANI) – Researchers at the ULCA
Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology claim to
have developed a new drug which not only has the
capability to slow down the progression of juvenile
diabetes, but also prevent at-risk children from ever
developing the disease.
The Drug known as Diamyd contains a protein called " GAD"
and was specifically developed for tackling Juvenile
diabetes, which is also called Type 1 diabetes.
The experiment conducted on diabetic-prone mice found
that upon being treated with GAD proteins they did not
develop diabetes. Later tests on people diagnosed with
diabetes proved equally successful.
"The results are quite remarkable. It definitely has the
potential to be a great breakthrough", the National
Enquirer quoted Daniel Kaufman, Ph.D., a professor at the
UCLA Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology as
saying.
Researchers are hopeful that the drug could be used to
vaccinate children against diabetes permanently.
"We’re hoping the drug turns out to be even more
effective on people who are in earlier stages of
diabetes. You want to stop the disease from ever
developing", the paper quoted him as saying.

Heart disease and diabetes can be passed on for generations
ANI
June 18, 2004
Washington, June 18 (ANI) – According to a study
conducted by the University of Edinburgh, babies exposed
to excess hormones in the womb, are not only at an
increased risk of developing heart disease and diabetes
later in life, but can also pass these risks to their
children also.
Researchers have reported in the American Journal of
Physiology, that genetic risks to the health of future
generations can come from either parent.
Scientists from the university have now shown in
laboratory tests that low birth weight and the increased
risk of diabetes can be passed by a mother or father to
their own children.
Researcher Dr Mandy Drake explains, the baby is normally
protected from the high levels of steroid hormones in the
mother by the placenta. However, studies have shown that
low birth weight babies have been exposed to higher
levels of the mother’s own steroid hormones crossing the
placenta during pregnancy.
"We believe that exposing the developing baby to excess
steroid hormones can alter the expression of key genes
which affect foetal growth and later risk of disease
which can be passed on to the next generation," Drake was
quoted as saying.
"We are now investigating the mechanisms behind this to
try and explain the short and long-term complications
associated with low birth weight in humans, which may
also have a significant impact upon the health of
subsequent generations," she added.
The better news is that the effect appears to be lost in
the third generation. This may explain why some diseases
appear to run in families for a couple of generations and
then slowly die out.

Yesterday, seen it on DW news, just cought the end of it, test was
conducted, a person, in mid 20′s, in perfect health, had to eat only
McDonald’s food for a certain period time?. After the test, he gained 12 kg
(about 25lb) weight from the food and tested for an early sign of liver
diseas.
GOOD food , he?

Sorry, about the recent inflaming about my post, I’ve seen people concern
about my off the wall statement that "I’m starving my self all day".
I don’t starve my self, that fasting period included my sleep time.
Actually, my wife thinks I eat too much, but than she it’s like a bird
naturally.
The good news, last day or two I’m getting good numbers on my BG meter, just
measured (111) after exercise and my morning BG was 165.
Did some exercise late night too. I’m feeling much better now, have more
energy.
Looks like, the lack or too little exercise was my problem, spending too
much time on the evil computer, didn’t help either.
I’ve been doing exercise twice a day the last 3-4 days, including bicycling
and it got my BG down very quick.
I also take up, fishing as a hobby, at least gets me out to the fresh air
for longer period of time.
Thank you all!
Looks like, I need a little head game to get me into this diet, exercise, BG
control discipline.
Nobody helps me, around me.

I’ve been taking glucophage for about 3 & 1/2 years. After one year I
noticed my toenails on my big toes began to get thicker and became
ingrown on both my feet. About 7 months ago I noticed the same thing
happening on the nails of the toes next to the big toes.
I’m thinking this is a side effect of the glucophage. my doctor os not
aware of such a side effect.
Is this happening or has this happened to anyone else who takes
glucophage?
Hi there.
Does anybody know about a connection between smoking and high level of
blood glucose ?
My wife got a high glucose level and we suspect that her smoking has
to do with it.
thanks .beni.

The role of labile iron pool in cardiovascular diseases.
Kruszewski M.
Department of Radiobiology and Health Protection, Institute of Nuclear
Chemistry and Technology, Warszawa, Poland.
Although multiple factors are associated with cardiovascular pathology, there
is now an impressive body of evidence that free radicals and nonradical
oxidants might cause a number of cardiovascular dysfunctions. Both direct
damage to cellular components and/or oxidation of extracellular biomolecules,
e.g. LDL, might be involved in the aetiology of cardiovascular diseases. The
key molecules in this process seem to be iron and copper ions that catalyse
formation of the highly reactive hydroxyl radical. Chelation of iron ions has a
beneficial effect on the processes associated with the development of
atherosclerosis and formation of post-ischemic lesions. These findings are
indirectly supported by the increasing body of evidence that stored body iron
plays a crucial role in pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and
ischemia/reperfusion injury.
