Carbohydrate Intolerance?

I’ve been noticing lately that whenever I eat anything that has a "high" sugar
content (even fruit, esp apples) or anything starchy, I become very groggy and
begin to doze off almost immediately, or I become what I feel is "punch
drunk" by slurring my speech and not thinking clearly. Sometimes the
drowziness is so bad that I cannot stay awake no matter what! In addition,
when I drink alchohol, my entire body immediately begins to ache as if I have
the flu. This only lasts for a short time but is very intense. It doesn’t
matter what type of alchohol or how much (even NyQuil or those chocolate
covered cherries with the liquor). Lately, this achy feeling has been coming
on after eating breads and pastas.

I have seen some doctors and nutritionists, and their answers range from: "Gee
that’s interesting" (and nothing was done) to "YEAST! THE EVILS OF YEAST!" to
"Take Chromium by the gallons". I have been tested for a cilliac (sp?) sprue
and diabetes, and both were negative. I am 100 lbs overweight, but even when I
was thinner, I had the same problem.

Someone suggested that I may have "reactive hypoglycemia",
but I thought those theories were discounted decades ago. Someone else
suggested seeing an endocronologist, but I’m not sure why. Can anyone help?

Thanks
Paula

A Pox on The Aspartame Hysteria

Time to move the discussion over to alt.conspiracy.  It’s getting more
than a bit off topic for misc.health.diabetes.

Depends on the wine, to some extent.  The sugar content of wine varies

Insulin storage

I take small amounts of regular insulin 2-3 times a day… 5
units before dinner, 2 units as needed before breakfast, and 3
units before lunch.  I also take 3 units of NPH at bed.

With these small amounts of insulin I never us up a whole bottle
within a month.  A bottles last several months.  I don’t store
the bottle I’m working on in the refrigerator, 1st) the insulin
is too cold to take, 2nd it is so inconvient that I would never
be able to take my 3 units before lunch while at work.  I keep a
bottle in my desk at work.

The question I have is should I be replacing the bottles every
month even though I don’t use them up?  And, if not, exactly how
long would it be reasonable to keep using a bottle at room
tempature before I should replace it?

I’ve never seen granuals start forming in my NPH bottle and I
think that one has lasted for 6 months.

Glucometer Elite Test Strips For Sale

Because of a reduced need to test at this time, I have five packages of
test strips that I will not need. They are "Glucometer Elite" #3918
strips, 50 per package, and they expire 9/96.  I would like to recover
some of my cost and have them serve a useful function for someone else.

If you are interested, reply with an offer to my e-mail address, *not
through the newsgroup*.

Pancreatic cancer

My neighbor’s been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. His doctors’ve
told him there’s nothing that can be done. Why can’t they simply
remove the pancreas and have him live out the rest of his life on
insulin? I know I’ve read of other instances where the pancrease was
removed (pancreatitis) where the person continued to live an otherwise
normal life.
