Diabetes and high fiber diets

I have recently gathered a lot of journal articles from the medical
literature discussing possible uses of certain nutrients in treating
diabetes. Especially:

1) Fiber for improved glucose level control

2) Antioxidants for reduction of atherosclerotic plaquing of vessels

3) Trace minerals in metabolism of glucose

There seems to be a very bright future for patients to be able to be
partly treated with nutritional supplements.

blindness

Hello all,

I read in a newspaper that ANTHOCYAN (made from wild blueberrys) can avoid
diabetes-caused blindness. Anyone who knows more about this ?

Any suggestions welcome,

Gerrit.

Diamicron tablets

Hi,

Does anyone have some experience with "diamicron" tablets?
I have been diagnosed with type I diabetes but a C-peptide test
showed that I still produce considerable amounts of insulin myself.
I suppose that I’m in the honeymoon period (I was diagnosed two
months ago).

Currently I am trying to take one tablet of diamicron instead of my
supper-time regular and bed-time NPH. In the morning I still have
my usual dose of regular and NPH. It SEEMS that my body is capable of
taking me through the night. I monitor my BG frequently to make sure
things are ok. Did anybody else do a similar experiment?

Finally, did it ever happen that the beta cells simply shut off under
extreme stress and then started to function (almost) normally after a
while?

Thanks in advance for any response.

Regards,
Vidar

Re: Eyesight/Constipation

Blurred vision was one of my main symptoms.  The diabetic nurse said that
it usually takes approximately 4-6 weeks for the blurriness to reverse.  My
vision reverted to its normal state after four weeks.

Apology

To readers of misc.health.diabetes:

On January 3 I posted information re sugar-free candy.  I received
several replies explaining the purpose of this newsgroup and the feelings
regarding ads.  I would like to formally apologize to anyone who was
offended for using this group for purposes other than those intended; I
am new to this system and just beginning to learn the rules and regs.  It

I am not replying to your Fasting thread but to your comment that you
fly RC. I am a diabetic and I am also an RCer, have been for about 20
years although I am either an advanced beginer or intermediate. I live
out in the woods so flew by myself until one day I lost my field and at
the same time my interest.  I have not flown in 5 years but like to
build tho I am not a finiky or scale builder.  I mostly like the smell
of glue and balsa.  I have 10 about completed and am working on a P38.

Is there an RC news group?  What is your location and some of your
history?  If I am not too bold.

Diabetes and Vegetarians

Has anyone had any experience with Diabetes and Vegetarians. I
gave up meat five years ago now as I have also had two heart
attacks. I am having some trouble keeping my diabetes under
control. Particularly, my am reading can be all over the place.
I am wondering about the value of long-term insulin in the
evening after eating a veg meal because I am often running with
a normal reading by bed time.

type 1 1/2 diabetes

Recently I have been diagnosed with type 1 and a-half diabetes and am
seeking information on this diagnosis. (my doctor calls it type 1.5
diabetes because I have some of the symptoms of a type 1 diabetic-my
identical twin brother was a type 1 at 15 – but I am older, 38.  I am of
average weight and exercise regularly.)

My doctor says the chances of me becoming a type 1 diabetic are very high,
it is just a matter of time before my pancreas shuts down completely.
(currently i am in the "honeymoon" phase and have gone off the oral
medication.)

any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill

Cold Feet

I learned about glucophage here and it works wonders for me.  My morning
is down to 70-110.  My question is at night, in bed,  I notice that my
feet below the ankles are quite cold to the touch.  I am 49 and would like
to keep my feet for a long time.  Is this normal for a diabetic.  What can
be done to make it better.

Sincerely,
Allan E. Levy
