define "control"

hi,

Bplease let me ask a few quesions.

first, what is meant by "control"?  it seems as though everybody
has a different definition of it.  by the way, i am overweight,
type 2, very insulin resistant;  never get as low as 200, even with
a total of 150 units a day.  don’t often get to 400.

Dwhat is meant by "multiple injections"?  i guess that’s what i may be
on.  60 nph at bedtime, 35r in am, 25 or more r before each other meal.

still working to get enough insulin to lower bg.

why does insulin make a person gain weight?  it seems as though food
has become much more fattening since i started insulin 8 months
ago.

is it possible to see further improvement.  it seems as though i start
getting hungry, weak, trembly, etc., when my bg drops close to 200.

thank you for any input,

barbara

Chromate Lowers Cholesterol????

Chromium Supplement Awarded U.S. Patent for Lowering Cholesterol
(retyped for clarity)

The U.S. Patent Office has approved a patent on the
cholesterol lowering effects of a unique chromium-niacin compound
called Chromate.  U.S. patent No. 4,954,492 is the first and only
patent awarded a chromium supplement for lowering blood lipids such
as cholesterol and triglycerides.
Chromate,  manufactured by InterHealth of Concord,  Calif.,
has been shown to lower cholesterol and triglycerides levels in
test animals and in humans.  A University study awaiting
publication,  involving 34 subjects showed Chromate substantially
lowered serum cholesterol levels,  improved total cholesterol/HDL
ratios and reduced triglycerides levels in young male athletes who
had moderate cholesterol levels to begin with.
The study was directed by Robert Lafavi,  now Director of
Research for the Health and Human Performance Laboratory at Georgia
Southern University.
Although Lafavi stresses that the data are preliminary,   he
is very encouraged by the results.  “The results were substantial.”
Lefavi says,  “What effect this compound will have on people with
high cholesterol levels due to negative chromium balance,  one can
only speculate.”
Lafavi plans on expanding his research  of the compound by
evaluating its effects on people who are likely to be at risk of
Cardiovascular disease.

Hi Kevran,

This product is also available in Australia (made in the USA & packaged in
Australia). I use it on my cornflakes or rolled oats with breakfast in the
morning just as I used to use sugar.  The nutrition information table on
the packet shows the following per 100g data:-

Energy          1560 kJ
Protein         < 1g
Fat             0g
CARBOHYDRATE
– Total         92.8g
– Sugars        2.7g
Sodium          73mg
Potassium       6mg

As a comparison, the CARBOHYDRATE data from the corn flakes packet is
– Total         86.0g
– Sugars        6.6g

and the (Uncle Tobys) oats
– Total         61.7g
– Sugars        1.0g

The other thing I’ve noticed is that although Splenda looks and tastes
much the same as sugar, a given volume of Splenda is much lighter than
sugar.

If you need more info, the name of the distributer here is
JOHNSON & JOHNSON PACIFIC PTY. LTD
154 PACIFIC HIGHWAY
ST LEONARDS 2065
NSW
AUSTRALIA

BTW, do food manufacturers & producers put the nutrition information on
the packets in the USA? I sure find that it makes browsing the
supermarket shelves much easier.

cheers,

Norm

Fingerstick A1C?

How many of you have physicians with a fingerstick A1C machine in their
office?  Of  the 4 pediatric endocrinologists my son has been to, only
one had such a machine.   Unfortunately I couldn’t continue with that
physician because he didn’t believe in a sliding scale for insulin.
While we are exceedingly happy with our current endo, she doesn’t have
this machine in her office.   In this day and age of available technology,
we should demand that they stop taking blood from veins, when a
fingerstick will do.  I just ordered a home A1C test that uses a
fingerstick.  It’s from DSS in Florida.  The kit is pending FDA approval.
In my opinion, my 8 year old should be able to have one comprehensive
blood work drawn from his vein per year, and the rest of these A1C tests
should be done from the fingerstick.  I’ll keep you posted about the
results.  The video it came with shows how simple it is.

Travel States side, Insulin timings?

        Hello People.
This is my first time on internet so please be gentle with me
in the event of any Faux-pas.
My wife has recently, 1.5 months ago, has been diagnosed as
insulin dependant. She currently jabs herself once per day with 12-16
U’s, normally 0900.
I’m relatively sure it’s 100% slow acting insulin.

We are traveling to Los Angeles End of this week and I’m
looking for anybody with advice and experience. I’ll set out my
rough idea for the schedule, BUT I am fully open to critism.

how to get through the season?

I’m hopeful some people can help me.  My husband was diagnosed with type 2
in November 1994 at the age of 33. He is of average weight. He is taking
the max amount glucophage and 2.5 mg. of glucotrol.  He is sensitive to
insulin; his BG plummets with as little as 2 units.  Last holiday season,
he was so newly diagnosed, that he was experimenting with  treatment. I
feel like this is the first time he’s really on a regime.

My concern is this.  He is nervous about all social situations this
season.  He really eats at regular times. He is prone to hypoglycemic
episodes if he waits too long to eat.  Usually by the time he feels it
coming on, it’s too late. . . he treats it but his liver generally is
kicking in some glucose on top of this (our educated guess). So, timing
dinner reservations, etc. has been a nightmare. He eats dinner at 6:30 pm
pretty much precisely every single day.  This is not always possible in a
restaurant situation or when dining with friends. he feels he is "putting
people out", but he knows how serious this is too. It’s easier to "avoid"
then deal with this. However, I don’t want to sit home all through the
holidays.  Plus, we are going to a lovely restaurant on Friday for my
birthday where meals tend to take  a while. We RARELY go out because of
this problem.

I don’t know what to do. I’m sure others out there have found ways to cope
with this. . . slow waiters, busy holiday season, etc. Also, there’s the
issue of eating at other people’s homes. . .things do happen.
Thanksgiving at  his sister’s was 1 hour later than planned. . .although
she did her very best. The turkey did not cooperate.

Any advice? Should he take a swig of juice if the wait gets too long?
Then, he really has to watch what to eat at his meal?  I really would love
some help and ideas. Thanks in advance.

insurance

I have a brittle diabetes and would like to try an insulin pump.
My endo. told that he does not do pumps, but insulin pump probably
could help me. I talked with several other endo. in my HMO but none
of them do insulin pumps. Can anyone give me advice what to do in
this situation. By the way my A1c is good and usually around 7.
My health insurance is AETNA "Select choice".

Thanks.
Mike.

"Sharko's" (sp) Disease???

I’m new to this newsgroup, and inquiring for my Mom. She’s been a Type
II diabetic for years, and has pretty well kept it under control. This
summer, though, she broke a bone in her foot–3 months later, she broke
the one next to it. Each broke easily–digging in the garden, and
stepping on a sprinkler. IT’s been nearly 7 months, and the bones
haven’t healed yet. The doctor told her today that she may have
"Sharko’s"sp? Disease, and that it is caused by diabetes. She’s to stay
on that funny-looking "shoe" thing for 3 more weeks, then I guess he’ll
evaluate further.

Have any of you ever heard of this? If so, we’d like to know more about
it.

Thank you,
Carolyn Burton
