Painful and swollen hands and diabetes

Newsgroups: misc.health.diabetes
Subject: Swollen hands and diabetes

My father-in-law is an insulin-dependent diabetic for over 30 years.  About 5 or 6 weeks ago he became tired easily and ached a lot.  The doctors told him he had Lyme Disease. He was given some medication to fight it. About 2 weeks ago his wrists and hands became swollen and painful to the point of keeping him from sleeping thru the night. The doctors told him that’s arthritis, induced by the diabetes.

I posted this article hoping to find others out there having or had the same condition(s) that would like to share their experiences.  Is there hope?

Thank you.

illness and blood-sugar levels

Over the weekend I read a newspaper article indicating that some MDs are
rethinking symptomatic treatment of illness when more comprehensive
treatment is unavailable.  Symptoms are thought to be part of the body’s
defense efforts, and thus shouldn’t be suppressed.  The example given
was fever, which is said to be an attempt to disable invading organisms.

Has anyone heard of, or does anyone care to formulate, a theory in which
high blood sugar during illness might be part of the body’s defenses?
I ask as I struggle through a cold, with the usual attendant (for me)
elevated blood sugars.

Fix for COM Problem when Downloading OTII to Pentium

A bug exists in Pentium machines using PCI bus. The bug involves the 16550 UART chip.
The bug affects serial communications in Windows 3.1 and Windows for WG.  We have
drivers that fix the problem.  The WinWG driver was supplied by Microsoft and the
Win 3.1 was provided by Gateway but will work on all machines.  If someone would like
to supply me a place to upload these drivers to, we’ll make them available to
anyone (BioStore customers or not).  An interim workaround involves changing
the [386 Enh] section of System.ini to include the following line:
COMxFIFO=0
Replace x with the COM port you are using for meter communications (i.e. COM2FIFO=0)

Newly diagnosed, problems adjusting to meds

Hello all.  I’ve been diagnosed Type II (diet, exercise(I’m trying…),
and Glucotrol XL) since last September.  I’ve been lurking here for a
month or so.  I wanted to say thank-you for all the help you’ve been.
Reading the advice and experiences here has helped me shorten the usual
denial phase and get me started in the right direction…

But now a question…
I’ve had strange reactions to the Glucotrol XL.  My BG’s are still in the
130′s so I don’t think it’s hypo related.  What happens when I take the
pills is my mental capacities slow down.  It’s kind of hard to explain,
it’s like I have to concentrate extra hard just to get along.  Some
examples:  I’m a speed reader, and with the medication instead of being
able to scan a page, I have to force myself ro read every word to have
any comprehension.  I play guitar with a small choir, it’s taking me more
than twice as long to learn new music and be able to follow the
conductor.  My wife is getting frustrated as I ask the same question
multiple times in a short period of time.  In a normal conversation I
find it hard to find the right words (my mind goes blank). When customers
at work come to town for design discussions I need to discontinue the
meds for a couple of days in order to do my job.

It’s kind of frustrating.  These are not listed as common side effects of
Glucotrol.  My doctor feels that it is from my body adjusting to the
medication.  The effects are not as severe now as when I first started it
(tho I may just be getting used to compensating…)

Have any of you had similar experiences to oral medication?  Could this
just be an adjustment from BG’s 350+ to 130′s?

Thanks for listening, I appreciate any advice you can offer.

Mike Type II Diet, Exercise, Glucotrol XL 5mg

Type 2, Southbury, Conn.

I have a good friend who lives in Southbury, has Type 2 and is suffering a
lot w/burning & painful feet.  We would welcome suggestions for
alleviating these.  Also, any info on Metformin.
Does anyone know of a support group in or near Heritage Village?  She’s
feeling quite alone with her problems.  I’d like to get her into computers
so she can join this newsgroup but since I live in San Francisco that’s
difficult to do long-distance.
Please leave any messages here or you can e-mail me at ed…@aol.com
Thanks!!!

Leg problem blues

Hello everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for what to do about
leg numbness associated with spidery small red veins that I have on my
left leg.  I know these ugly critters are a direct result of my Type II
diabetes.  But, they or rather the numbness I’m feeling in that leg
bothers me.  I recently started walking for exercise again after a year
and a half stage of denial.  Back then I could walk up to 4 miles and I
was doing wonderfully.  NOw, the numbness I feel in my leg affects my
ability to walk for a long period of time and I find it hard to increase
my pace as well. I have a stationary bike at home, but I perfer walking
over all other forms of exercise.

Is it possible to reverse the effects that diabetes has already bestowed
upon me?

FAQ

Hi

I just found out yesterday that I have Gestational Diabetes.  I don’t get
to see the endocrinologist until Friday and have heard so much conflicting
advice about what to eat and what not to eat.  Is there a diabetic food
FAQ available?

BTW I had no symptoms except for a suddenly large for dates baby.

Thanks

Petra
