Diet vs. Regular SodaPop Test

Hi,
I was scanning the TV yesterday with my wife for something to
watch when I came across "Living with Diabetes" on CNBC. My
wife is diabetic so we decided to watch the program.

A short story in the program had to deal with testing sodapop
you receive, at restaurants and such, to see if you really were
given diet (sugar-free) if that is what was ordered. This has
been a problem for us at times because the "taste test" isn’t
always obvious. Anyway, here’s what to do.

Buy a dispenser of Urine Glucose Testing Paper. Tear off a strip
and place a drop of the soda on the paper. Wait to see if the
paper reads "negative" or "positive" for glucose. Obviously, you
want the paper to read "negative". THEY EMPHASIZED ON THE SHOW
"NOT" TO DIP THE PAPER INTO THE SODA, RATHER, USE THE STRAW AS
A DROPPER TO GET THE SODA ONTO THE TEST STRIP.

I thought this was clever and told my wife I would share it with
the rest of "you". Hope you find it useful too!!

Diabetes Publications WANTED

Hi,
Can anyone tell me some names of good magazines or newsletters
I can receive regarding diabetes? I’d really appreciate it if
you could supply phone numbers and/or addresses as well.

I’m looking for literature that deals with how to cope with
diabetes, individually and as a family. Although info on the
latest research and the like is interesting, I’m not looking
        for a technical digest.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

exercise & bg

Hi you all!
Since I’ve noticed that there’re some pretty scientific (sounding)
people in this group I thought of asking a tough question. I’m a 25
year old Type I diabetic (had it for .. 15 years, I guess). One of
my problems is raised bg levels as a result of exercise. Typically
my bg rises to 15 – 25 mmol/l after a medium-long (1 – 2 hours) hard
(pulse rate probably in excess of 170 – 180 at times) exercise. I’ve
always had this trait, in my younger days I played hockey and even
then the same thing happened.

I remember talking to my doctor about this and we came to the conclusion
that my body extracts more energy from my liver(?) and muscles(?) than
I use up. Any cures for this? As it is now, I’m having to take extra
insulin (and of course check my bg level) after exercising, which is
a drag. Should I eat more before the exercise? Would my body then extract
less energy and only use up what I eat?

Thanks in advance, Jan.

Medical Info on the Internet

I am an assistant working on a project dealing with ways in which types
of medical information is being distributed over the Internet.  We are
examining how self-care, self-treatment, preventative medicine, and
alternative medicine information is being spread over the net and the
resources by which this information is available.

I have already begun composing a list of gopher and telnet sites, mailing
lists and newsgroups through which such information is available.  If you
know of any means by which such information as is described above is
available over the Internet, I would greatly appreciate your input.  I am
interested in all Internet resources (eg. telnet, gopher, ftp, WWW,
newsgroups, mailing lists (please include registration info if possible),
etc.).

Please e-mail any information you wish to pass along to me at
i…@europa.cs.mun.ca.  Your help is greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Real Life Articles Wanted

I’m seeking real-life articles to put in the DFAN newsletter.  The articles
can cover any aspect of diabetic life and that INCLUDE people who don’t have
diabetes.  You might have a spouse or friend who is diabetic, and if so
I’d like to hear from you too.  The articles should be from 500-1000 words
in length, but if it’s shorter we’ll still accept it.  The article can be
about anything you’d like to talk about..diagnosis, fear, sadness, happiness,
living with a diabetic, loving with a diabetic…anything you’d like to share.
If you’d like to know more write me.  And don’t worry about spelling or
grammar…:)

Mixing R and UL in same syringe?

I’ve seen that there is some debate over the mixing of R and UL in the
same syringe.  I have been mixing R and UL in the same syringe for a
couple of months now and really havent been having any problems with it.
Does anyone out there draw up their doses of R and UL and inject them
separately, but at the same time?  Do you notice any difference in how the
insulins work?

Thanks

Worried

I’m posting this article on behalf of a friend, if you can help, Email or
post in reply please.

My friends girlfriend has diabetes mellitus type I. Shes very quiet about
it, to the extent of not really being willing to talk to him about it at
all. He’s very concerned (he loves her ……) and he’d like to know any
information that readers of the group feel pertinent. We’ve read the FAQ
which was helpful, but didn’t really tell us what to do to minimize the
pressure we inadvertantly put on her by our studentish lifestyle. Three
days ago she had a hypo attack (that right?) in his arms, causing him to
go nearly distraught with worry about her after it was over.
Thanks very much in advance…..

euglycemic agents

I have recently become aware of a new class of antidiabetics called
euglycemics.  They lower blood sugar to normal levels but do not
affect normal blood sugar levels.  Apparently they increase the
sensitivity to circulating insulin although the exact molecular mechanism
is unknown.  A few examples of this class of compounds is: pioglitazone,
englitizone and ciglitazone.  Pfizer in the US and Takeda and Sankyo in
Japan are working on such compds (Upjohn also, I think).  I would like
to kno more about this from anyone who has the information:

1.  What is the current status on clinical trials, who is doing them
and where?
2.  What is their mechanism of action?
3.  Do they completely normalize glucose levels or is there need for
other treatment in addition?

I  would appreciate any information in this regard.  It would be preferable
if you sent email to me directly since I do not regularly scan this group.

Thank you all very much

Alcohol and Diabetes

Greetings:

I have a close friend who has diabetes, and so I decided to
subscribe to this group to learn more about it.  I have noticed
certain things, and have a question:

My lifestyle is a fast one: bars, parties, women, hanging out,
fast food, etc.  Usually I go out to the bar twice, and sometimes
three times a week.  My friend almost invariably joins me.  Relatively
speaking, I drink a lot(not for my size, I’m over 250 lbs).  My friend
weighs much less than me, but drinks about the same, and usually gets
drunk.

She has Type I diabetes.  What effect would her getting drunk
have on her condition?  Should she continue to drink as much, or
should she cut (way) back?  Should I help her with this(I should
probably cut back anyways, it’s eating into my wallet!)?

Any suggestions and comments are welcomed.
