Fast insulin for T2s?

All the discussion I’ve seen about using fast-acting insulin in
conjunction with meals has been about/by T1s (AFIK).  Is this ever done
for T2s?  If not, is that because (a) it doesn’t work (b) it’s a Bad
Idea becaue _________ (c) people can’t stand the injections (d) I want
to phone a friends.

TOFU HATERS, TAKE HEART

Tofu Haters, Take Heart

There’s plenty of soy to go around in other forms.

By J. M. Hirsch
The Associated Press
Fresno Bee
Wednesday, February 27, 2002

The vegetarian love affair with tofu has done as much
harm as good for the reputation of the rather mild-
mannered soy bean.

Though it certainly has publicized the health benefits
and versatility of this legume, the emphasis on tofu has
left many people with the impression it is the only, or
best, source of soy protein.

Not the case. And that’s good news for those whose
stomachs turn at the sight of the gelatinous white
blocks.

The shelves of natural-food stores, and increasingly
mainstream grocers, are stacked with great sources of soy
— some cleverly disguised, others good in their own
right.

Miso is one such source. Best known as the primary
ingredient in Japanese soups, miso is a salty paste made
from fermented soy beans and other ingredients. Like
cheese, miso is aged. The longer it ages, the darker its
color and stronger its taste. First-time miso buyers
should stick with white or yellow, which has a sweet,
tangy taste. When dark misos are used in soups, they can
taste like beef broth to vegetarian tastebuds.

Miso soup is easy to make. Bring water and vegetables to
a boil.

Reduce to a simmer and cook until the vegetables are
tender. Add miso during the final three minutes, as
cooking intensifies its flavor.

Use 1 teaspoon miso per 1 cup of liquid.

But soup is just the beginning. Miso can make a great
marinade for vegetables, seafood and even meats. It also
is popular whipped into scrambled eggs, omelets and
mashed potatoes, and spread like butter on corn-on-the-
cob.

Shish kebabs are a great way to introduce people to the
taste of miso. Those who eat seafood can substitute giant
scallops for the tofu. Vegetarians trying to cut fat
could use baked, seasoned tofu instead of deep-fried.

Tempeh is another fermented soy bean product, though it
bears no resemblance to miso. It is made from crushed soy
beans, comes in 1/2-inch thick slabs and has a meaty
texture. Several companies use tempeh to make baconlike
products.

Because tempeh is firmer than tofu, it can be easier to
stir-fry. Though edible right from the package, tempeh is
best when marinated and cooked. Raw tempeh can have a
bitter taste.

For a great "meat" sauce for pasta or lasagna, crumble
tempeh in a skillet with a bit of olive oil and soy
sauce. Saute until the tempeh bits brown, about five
minutes. Add this to any prepared pasta sauce.

Here are some other great ways to enjoy soy, minus the
tofu:

Soy milks have come a long way in recent years, and many
varieties now are available in the refrigerated sections
alongside dairy milk. For drinking or on cereals, use
vanilla-flavored for the creamiest taste. Soy milk also
is good for baking.

Soy protein powders are great for people who drink fruit
smoothies. One scoop will give the drink a creamy, thick
consistency without altering its taste.

Many breads now are being baked using soy flours. Don’t
just think sandwich. Brush the slices with olive oil,
then toast in a 350-degree oven until dry and crisp. Cut
into chunks for croutons, or pulverize in a food
processor for bread crumbs.

Edamame, often served in Asian restaurants, is fresh soy
beans still in the pods. Most grocers sell them frozen.
Steam the beans for 5 minutes. To serve, toss them in a
bowl with a generous sprinkling of salt. To eat, hold a
pod by one end, and place the other end in your mouth.
Suck the beans out of the pod, licking the salt off the
outside in the process.

Serious Type II symptoms with perfect BG???

Hello Everybody,

I was studying the diabetes board every once in a while for a couple
of months now, but could not find any specific information about the
"Diabetes"-Condition I am struggling with for almost one year now. Any
help, idea or general direction is highly appreciated and very
welcomed!!

Since 11 months I have basically every single condition which would
make me a typical Diabetes Type II Person:

EXCESSIVE THIRST – Especially after eating certain foods (fruits,
noodles, white bread, … all the good stuff).

EXCESSIVE URINATION – Urine often has no color at all.

BLURRED VISION- got my glasses corrected twice the last 5 months.

EXTREME FATIGUE – I currently have a very hard time to keep up with my
job :-( … could sleep 12 hours a day. I had that for a couple of
years, but it got much worse the last 11 months.

Now, here comes the weird thing: my blood glucose level IS "NORMAL"
ALL THE TIME. Over the last 7 months, I reduced sugar/carbs intakes,
increased protein/fat intake and started exercising. Before changing
my lifestyle, my BG was between 95 and 110 (bought me a Ascensia Elite
BG Meter from Bayer and check it occasionally). Right now, my BG is
usually between 85 and 100. EVEN AFTER EATING it stays sometimes at
85. The highest level I ever got was 125.

Did anybody of you ever have a similar condition? Did anybody of you
all have any ideas what weird condition that could be??

All symptoms are sometimes better, sometimes worse. I feel like
changing my lifestyle helped a lot. Still, the symptoms usually occur
when I don’t exercise, eat sugar or too many carbs.

You also could contact me directly by mail: mike.porwe…@gmx.net

Thank you all in Advance!!
Mike

P.S. I am 31 years old, male & little overweight and Type A blood
type. Regular Office Job, pretty high stress level. I am having that
Fatigue Thing for a couple of years, but it got horrible the last 11
months.

Swelling of feet and ankles

I am a 64 yearold male type 2 diabetic. I take Actos, Zetia, Calan,
Novolog (insulin), Folic Acid, and a baby asperin daily. For about two
years or so I have had swelling of my feet and ankles. My
endocrinologist says its due in part to the Actos. He seems
unconcerned, "A trade-off," he says. I’ve been thoroughly checked out
for heart problems, echo cardiogram, Thalium stress test, even an
angiogram. Clean as a whistle. But the swelling in my feet and ankles
is annoying. Because of my work I sit in a car all day and don’t get
much exercise. In addition, I don’t drink nearly enough water.

Anyone have any ideas how to reduce or eliminate the swelling?

Thanks.

Relion Ultima and strips supply cant meet demand yet !

8/15/2004

My local Walmart had plenty of the Relion Ultima strips , but no meter on
7/27 ( just sold the last meter 1 hour before I got there )

I managed to get a Ultama meter fedexed , but now they sold out of the
Ultima strips ( even though I asked them to hold a 100 box of strips , for
when my " backordered and waiting for on-hold Ultima meter gets in )

I and they BOTH got plenty of strips for they old Relion , so I am good to
go , but the SUPPLY on the Relion Ultima and Strips can not even BEGIN to
keep up with the demand as of this posted date . ( even Ultima strips have
been backordered for quite a while now )

I wont do mail order ( and pay shipping ), because I have other stuff to get
while I am down there close to the home supply , just as soon as the Ultima
meter and strips finally get in .

Maybe I will just get some strips for my Accucheck Compact from Hocks to
verify it works until walmart gets stocked LOL

Either that , or I will continue to buy strips for the 2 relion Origionals
until 1 of them dies LOL ( which I might do regardless , since I usually
hate learning new stuff and change , unless it is a mass improvement ( like
the ultima instructions indicate it probably will be )…LOL

8/16/2004

The only reason I posted this , is that it might be a good reason to get
some extra Ultima strips , if all you have is an Ultima meter , since they
seem to be having a run on them ( for now ) , tim

8/17/2004

LOL , Now my local W/M cant even get a " release date " for Ultima strips
and meters . "All we can do , is just keep ordering them " LOL ( for 3 weeks
now ) LOL

I am GLAD I have 2 old Relions , and they have PLENTY of strips for it (
strip overstock ) . And an Accucheck Compact that I can get relatively cheap
strips from Hocks mail order LOL

Cant order Ultima strips by mail either , they only have the OLD style BG
strips on the W/M website now , and supposedly you can still mail-order an
old style meter too , even though the local store is perminately out on old
style Relion meters LOL

Life sure is humerous sometimes ! ,

Carb Question

I have just joined this news group. I notice that you all discuss various topics in here. I have a question and I was hoping that you would be able to answer it. I was wondering if there was anything else you can cuont against Carbs to make them lower. such as there is 9 carbs, and there is 3 grams of fiber, it would be 3 Carbs. Is there anything else you can count against carbs to make them lower? Thanks For the help!

Hypoglycemic lately

I have been dieting for the past 2 months, eating right and working
out and I am starting to see some good results. The past two days I
have gone hypoglycemic. When I left the house yesterday my was BC was
81 today 95. I usually am in the low 110′s. I am talking to my doctor
about cutting my Glocovance in half and see if this helps. My question
is, I am still a long way from where I would like to be weight wise,
the past two days because I was not prepared for this because it only
happened to me once before I ran to the vending machine and purchased
a Payday candy bar. I guess I should really start having something
around that is helpful and better for me. I do not have a frig in the
area so I can’t have apple juice, unless I have it warm. I don’t think
that would be too much of a problem. Can I get suggestions to what I
can keep at my desk to help in the event of going hypoglycemic again?
Thanks in advance.
Also my PA told me that he thought Glocovance was not supposed to
cause hypoglycemia. Anyone hear this. Again Thanks
